Description:
Join us for a fun and informative one-evening workshop all about weaving yarn! Besides looms, yarn is a weaver’s favourite topic. In this session, we will discuss different fibres and styles of yarn, how to use them, and how to combine them. We will share samples made with yarns from the finest linen to the chunkiest yarn, and talk about how we select the right yarn for the job.
We'll start by reviewing common natural fibres: cotton, linen, silk, and wool. Understanding the properties, strengths and weaknesses of these fundamental fibres will help you make intelligent yarn decisions. We’ll talk about blended yarns, semi-synthetic and synthetic yarns, as well as combining yarns made from different fibres. We’ll also discuss how to sett, weave, and finish your fibres to achieve your desired effect.Â
Next, we'll dive into the details that set yarns apart: twist, plies, slubs, boucle, and more! We’ll also run through common sizing systems for weaving yarn. We’ll also dig into the knitting yarn vs. weaving yarn debate, and tell you how you absolutely CAN use a knitting stash for weaving.Â
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a deeper understanding of weaving yarn (and a longer holiday yarn wish list).Â
This workshop is perfect for anyone who has basic weaving experience, whether you're a newer weaver or an experienced weaver looking to expand your skills.Â
Our structure series is available in person or online. Online participants will receive a digital package before the workshop. They will be emailed a zoom link the morning of the workshop and have opportunities to ask questions and see our studio samples up close.
