Instructor: Molly JF Caldwell

Dates:

Saturday, Nov 6, 2021
Time: 10:00AM-5:00PM

About this Workshop:

Japanese Sakiori is a form of weaving with fabric scraps to create a new cloth. The word Sakiori comes from the word saku (to tear or rip) and oru (to weave). In this workshop, Molly will walk you through how to turn your fabric scraps into yarn, and then how to weave with the yarn you have created on a four shaft loom. You will create a small Sakiori rug/table runner/wall hanging of approximately 12x18”.

Molly JF Caldwell is a yonsei artist living and working in Mohkinstsis (“Calgary, AB”). She graduated from the Alberta University of Art and Design in 2017 and has been taking part in residencies, such as The Banff Centre, and exhibitions since then. Caldwell focuses on textiles and textile processes to investigate themes of power, hierarchy, and Otherness. Using her perspective as a mixed-race femme, she unpacks narratives using feminist frameworks. She is also interested in equity, accessibility, and pop music.
