About this Workshop: 

Learn to sew and walk away with a custom-made t-shirt! Designed for the beginner sewist, you will learn how to use a domestic sewing machine and how to prepare and cut fabric. Each participant will sew a t-shirt using a simple pattern as a starter project. By the end of this course, you will be well into your sewing journey!

We will be covering the following techniques:
  • How to use and troubleshoot a domestic sewing machine
  • How to sew and press seams 
  • How to prepare, mark, and cut fabric
  • How to construct a basic tool roll based on a pattern
Workshop Materials & Equipment: 
  • All materials for this workshop are included.
  • Cotton jersey for the t-shirt.
  • Pattern will be available to trace off so you can replicate the t-shirt at home again! 
  • Machines are available at our Studio. If you'd like to work with your machine from home, please let us know! 

About the Instructor:

Katelin Karbonik is an expert sewist specializing in sewing garments. Katelin is equally skilled at complex tailoring and sewing garment staples, and loves sharing her knowledge with sewists of all skill levels. Katelin's infectious enthusiasm and passion for all things textile has taken her to some incredible places over the past several years! She just finished an MA in Human Ecology at the University of Alberta, where her final project included a detailed hand-sewn reconstruction of a medieval pourpoint (doublet). She currently works as Associate Curator of Clothing and Textiles at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, and has worked assessing, repairing, and constructing costumes for Fort Edmonton Park as well as interning at the Royal Alberta Museum in textile conservation. 


No experience is required. This course is meant for complete beginners looking to build a solid sewing skills foundation.

We are not able to refund workshops. We are able to provide a store credit for workshops cancelled with 72 hrs notice. We are not able to provide a refund or store credit for cancellations with less than 72 hrs notice, even for participants who are feeling unwell. Thank you for your understanding.
