Next Steps in Rigid Heddle Weaving: Pick Up Sticks

This intermediate rigid heddle weaving workshop introduces weavers to pick-up sticks! Using simple manipulations, we will create different textures on our rigid heddle looms.

Date & Times:

3 Tuesday evenings

Feb 22, March 1 & 8

5:30 - 8:30 PM

About this Workshop: Pick-up sticks are a fun and simple way to create different weave structures on a rigid heddle loom. Over the course of three evenings, we will cover how to set up a warp for a pick-up stick pattern, how to create different sheds using a pick-up stick, and will weave textured towels and scrub cloths for hands-on practice with pick-up stick patterns.

WORKSHOPS EXTRA: This in-person workshop also includes access to our Next Steps in Rigid Heddle Weaving: Colour, Texture, Pattern online course. You'll have all the information from the workshop at your fingertips when you go home!

Skill Level: Intermediate rigid heddle weavers (if you've done a few projects and are comfortable warping your loom and weaving plain weave, this class is for you!)

Instructor: Alison Hurlburt

Ali Hurlburt is a handweaver and weaving instructor who only feels truly relaxed when sitting at a loom. At Gather she is the expert in rigid heddle looms: small, simple looms with lots of potential. She also teaches four shaft weaving and writes content for the Gather blog, troubleshooting series, and online learning. She sells her weaving under the name Booj Wovens, as well as exploring sacred weaving and inter-faith textile projects. She is passionate about welcoming new weavers to the craft and about bringing weaving into community spaces.

We will be covering the following techniques:
