Join us for a fun and informative one-evening workshop all about refurbishing old looms! Second-hand looms offer excellent savings... as long as they work! It can be hard to know whether a loom is worth the time, and what steps to take to get an older loom into its best possible working condition. The Gather team own and weave on looms that are sixty, eighty, even a hundred years old. In this session we'll share the practical knowledge we've gained from our hands-on experience restoring old looms.
We'll begin by going over the kinds of wear and tear that you'll see on old looms. What pieces most frequently need replacing? What can be salvaged, and what can't? We'll provide some tips for evaluating the condition of a loom you see posted for sale, and for estimating the costs of getting it into working condition. As we always say: there's no such thing as a free loom!
Then we'll get into some more complex problem solving. What to do if you're not sure what loom you have, or you don't have a manual, or you don't have a key part? We'll also go beyond simply getting a loom working and talk about getting it working well by optimizing its set up and considering upgrades and options.
By the end of the workshop, you'll be well equipped to take in a second-hand loom with confidence. We hope that at least a few looms will be rescued from garages as a result!
This workshop is perfect for anyone who has basic weaving experience, whether you're a newer weaver or an experienced weaver looking to expand your skills.
Our structure series is available in person or online. Online participants will receive a digital package before the workshop. They will be emailed a zoom link the morning of the workshop and have opportunities to ask questions and see our studio samples up close.
