Bryce Wicks/Kim McCollum
4 Tuesday evenings.
Nov 16-Dec 7, 2021
About this Workshop:
In this workshop you will weave a waffle weave throw blanket. Waffle weave is like no other weave structure. On the loom, it looks like a pattern of delicate diamonds made up of carefully organized floats. Once it’s washed, those floats transform into the walls of individual ‘cells’ that make up a highly textured cloth with incredible body. These blankets are dense and comforting without being stiff, and will hold up to repeated use and washing. Practical, beautiful, and distinctive!
The looms will be pre-warped for this project, so you get to come and get started right away.
We will be covering the following techniques:
- How does waffle weave work? We will discuss and show samples of various versions of waffle weave and their uses.
- Blanket design- you can choose one of our designs or create your own
- Basic floor loom operation for weavers who have used table looms only
- Waffle Weave Treadling techniques
- How to finish the edges of your blanket
- How to wash and care for your blanket
Workshop Materials & Equipment:
- Your workshop includes all the materials you need for this workshop.
- 100% cotton yarn in your choice of colours.
- A take home waffle weave handout
About the Instructors:
Kim McCollum is a Master Weaver and co-owner of Gather Textiles. There are many strands to her weaving practice. As a workshop instructor, she has taught hundreds of new weavers how to create cloth and design woven pieces. She has travelled to Morocco, India, and across the United States and Canada to learn about and teach weaving. Kim is also a working visual artist who earned an MFA from the University of Alberta in 2020. Her paintings and textile art explore the intersection of craft traditions and contemporary art through the structure of the grid. As a designer, she leads Gather’s pattern development and creative direction. Kim is constantly on the lookout for ways to grow communities around craft. Through workshops, collaborations, talks, shows, and gatherings, she builds connections between crafters and helps energize the local art and craft scenes.
Bryce Wicks is a weaver and pattern designer who takes experimenting with weave structures to a mad-scientist-level practice. His current fixation on waffle weave has earned him the nickname “The Waffle Weave Guy”. Bryce brings his own unique aesthetic to Gather, using strong colours, serious texture, and fun finishes. We are lucky to have such a passionate weaver on board!
Basic experience operating a loom is recommended for taking this class. Totally new to weaving? Swing by the studio to get an introduction!
