Nakita Valerio is an award winning writer, researcher and Muslim community organizer based on Treaty 6 territory in Edmonton. She is a graduate in history and Islamic-Jewish studies from he University of Alberta and has been a research fellow with the Tessellate Institute and the Institute for Religious and Socio-Political Studies. She serves as an advisor to the Chester Ronning Center for the Study of Religion and Public Life at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus.
Alison is a handweaver and weaving teaching whose favorite thing in the world is helping beginners make beautiful cloth in a warm and welcoming environment. Alison is a Christian lay preacher who weaves faith based textiles including hijabs, altar cloths, clergy stoles, and tallitot (Jewish prayer shawls). She looks forward to continuing to learn from sisters in other faiths while she develops her weaving practice.
For those who choose to wear it, the hijab represents a quiet act of worshipful submission to God. Yet this headscarf traditionally worn by Muslim women is wrongfully stigmatized in common understanding and media. Whether you have worn the hijab for years, are thinking of wearing it, or want to make one for someone you love, this workshop offers the opportunity to escape the cultural "noise" about hijab by sitting with one in intentional contemplation as you weave it with your own hands.
The technical side of this workshop will be instructed by seasoned weaver, Alison Hurlburt, with spiritual reflections and inspiration about the hijab from scholar and community organizer, Nakita Valerio.
You will learn the basics of weaving on a floor loom, and leave the workshop with a
completed hijab, ready to hem and wear!
Looms will be prepared ahead of time so that you can just show up and weave! We will provide a range of cotton thread colours for weft so that you can add your favourite colours to your hijab.
All supplies are included:
- Studio Floor Looms are used for this workshop
- Cotton warp
- Cotton weft
- Instructional Booklet
