Overshot Coverlet Pattern
The term “coverlet” is a fancy word to describe a handwoven blanket using an overshot weave structure. Historically woven on four-shaft looms using wool and cotton, coverlets were functional bed coverings that also served as displays of skill and personal expression. This pattern features a large-scale overshot design, characteristic of traditional 19th-century American coverlets. We’ve used an unconventionally bright pattern weft for a fresh look.
This project uses a cottolin warp for durability and crisp pattern definition, paired with a wool pattern weft that provides warmth, texture, and just the right amount of loft. The structure has a plain weave ground with pattern floats created by a supplementary weft. The finished blanket has a substantial hand without being overly heavy, offering excellent drape.
This pattern is ideal for weavers looking to explore overshot on a generous scale. Stick to it and you’ll have a very satisfying result!
Requires a four shaft loom.
You’ll need a reed at least 42.5” wide to weave the coverlet at full width. 12 or 18 dents per inch.
Difficulty: Intermediate
Finished Dimensions: 37"x 73" plus a 6” fringe on each end
