Download our Preparing Natural Fibres for Dyeing. Read through the instructions and make sure you have everything ready before starting with our kits or instructional PDF's.

Dyeing is a multi-step process and it’s helpful to have an understanding of the process from the beginning.

This handout will guide you through the process of preparing both protein (silk, wool, etc.) and cellulose (cotton, linen, etc.)  fibres for dyeing. We will go over why and how to prepare and scour both protein and cellulose fibres.

The mordanting of protein fibres will be covered for those who are preparing to naturally dye their fibre. Modanting cellulose is a more challenging process and we recommend beginning naturally dyeing silk or wool before moving on to cottons or linens.

Proper preparation of fibres before dyeing is essential to achieving successful and consistent colours. This handout is oriented towards natural dyeing but is a good resource for any dyer using natural fibres.
